How to Stop Groundnut Pods From Rotting in the Soil
How to Stop Groundnut Pods From Rotting in the Soil
Early in my groundnut farming I had a field that looked perfect from the top. The vines were thick and green, the flowers had been heavy, and I was already counting bags. At harvest I pulled the first plant and my stomach dropped. The pegs were there, but the pods hanging from them were black, soft and smelling of rot. Some had simply come off in the soil. I dug a whole row with my hands, and for every handful of good pods I found another handful of ruined ones. A whole season of work was rotting underground where I could not see it.
Groundnut is a crop that hides its secret. The flower is above the ground, but the pod grows below it, and everything that goes wrong there goes wrong out of your sight. After thirty years I have learned to protect the pods before they ever get into trouble. This is everything I do.
The short answer
To stop groundnut pods from rotting in the soil, plant on well drained, light textured soil, preferably on ridges or raised beds, rotate with cereals for at least two to three seasons, use clean certified seed, apply gypsum at early flowering so the pods get calcium, control termites, millipedes and other soil insects, avoid damaging the pegs when you weed, and harvest on time instead of leaving mature pods in wet soil. Rot is mostly a result of wet soil, calcium shortage, insect wounds and late harvest, and if you manage those four, the fungi have little to work with.
What most farmers get wrong
I made every one of these mistakes myself, so please read them as a friend talking.
They plant groundnut in heavy, wet soil. Groundnut pods need loose, well aerated soil to develop. In heavy clay or low spots that stay soggy, the pods sit in water and the fungi move in within days.
They skip gypsum, or apply it at the wrong time. Many farmers give the crop plenty of fertiliser but forget that the pod itself takes in calcium directly from the soil around it, not only through the roots. Without enough calcium in the pod zone, the seeds fail to fill, the shells are weak, and rot gets in easily.
They plant groundnut after groundnut. The fungi that cause pod rot live in the soil and in old crop residue, and they build up with every repeated crop. Planting the same crop on the same land year after year hands them a feast.
They weed carelessly late in the season. Once the pegs start going into the soil, hoeing deep or close to the plants cuts and bruises them. A broken peg is a dead pod, and every wound is a doorway for fungi.
They leave the crop in the ground too long. Mature pods that stay in wet soil after they are ready begin to rot, sprout or get eaten. Waiting for the last leaf to turn yellow often costs more than it gains.
They ignore the insects. Termites, millipedes and white grubs bore into pods and leave holes. Fungi then walk right in behind them, and the farmer blames the disease when the first problem was the insect.
Why pods rot: understanding the real causes
Pod rot is not one disease. Several things work together, and understanding them tells you where to act.
The first group is soil fungi. Pythium, Rhizoctonia and Fusarium are the main ones. Pythium thrives in wet soil and attacks the young, developing pods, causing them to turn brown or black and soft. Rhizoctonia thrives in warm, humid soil and causes dark, sunken lesions on pods and pegs. Fusarium attacks stressed plants and wounded pods. Sclerotium rolfsii, also known as stem rot or white mould, affects the stem and pods near the soil line, covering them in white threads with tiny round seed-like balls.
The second cause is calcium shortage. Groundnut pods take up calcium straight from the surrounding soil. When calcium in the top few centimetres of soil is low, the seeds fail to fill and the shells stay thin and weak. These pods are the first to rot, even when no obvious disease is present.
The third is waterlogging and compaction. Pods need air to develop. When the soil is too wet or too hard, the pods struggle, the fungi spread, and rot sets in quickly.
The fourth is insect and mechanical damage. Termites, millipedes, wireworms, white grubs and pod borers all make holes in the pods. Hoes, careless weeding and tools do the same to the pegs. Every wound lets fungi in.
The fifth is drought followed by heavy rain. A dry spell hardens the soil and stresses the plants, and a sudden downpour that follows can trigger rot. This is why steady moisture matters more than any single watering.
Step by step: how I stop pod rot
Step 1: Choose the right land
Pick light textured soil such as sandy loam, which drains well and lets the pegs penetrate easily. Avoid heavy clay, low spots where water collects and fields with a hard pan close to the surface. If you have a field that held water or had pod rot in the past, put cereals in it this season and start groundnut somewhere cleaner.
Step 2: Rotate your crops
Do not grow groundnut on the same land more than once every two to three years if you can help it. In between, grow maize, sorghum, millet or another cereal, which does not host the main pod rot fungi. Avoid following groundnut with other legumes that share the same diseases. Rotation is slow work, but it is one of the cheapest and most reliable tools you have.
Step 3: Prepare the soil well and plant on ridges
Till the soil until it is loose and fine at least twenty centimetres deep, so the pegs can push in easily. Break up any hard layer. Plant on ridges or raised beds about fifteen to twenty centimetres high so excess water drains away from the pod zone. Open drains at the edges of the field so heavy rain does not pond between the beds. This single step has saved more of my crop than any chemical ever did.
Step 4: Use clean, certified seed
Poor seed carries fungi and gives weak seedlings that rot easily. Buy certified seed from a reliable source. Shell the pods by hand shortly before planting, because seed shelled too early loses vigour, and discard any that are shrivelled, mouldy, cracked or discoloured. In areas with a history of seedling and pod diseases, use a seed dressing registered for groundnut in your country, and follow the label exactly. Never use treated seed as food or feed.
Step 5: Plant at the right time and spacing
Plant at the start of reliable rains, when the soil is warm and moist but not soaked. Choose a variety suited to your area, and check its recommended spacing. For many bunch type varieties, rows of about forty-five to seventy-five centimetres, with plants ten to fifteen centimetres apart, work well, while spreading types need more room. Crowded plants hold humidity at the soil surface and keep the pod zone wet. Sow about five centimetres deep, not too deep, because that slows emergence and leaves the seedlings exposed to soil fungi for longer.
Step 6: Apply gypsum at early flowering
This is the step that most farmers skip, and it is the one that makes the biggest difference to pod quality. Gypsum, which is calcium sulphate, supplies calcium right where the pods are forming. Apply it at about the start of flowering, usually around thirty to forty-five days after planting, when the pegs are about to go into the soil. Spread it in a band about thirty centimetres wide along each side of the row, on the soil surface, and lightly incorporate it without disturbing the plants.
The usual recommendation for many soils is somewhere around three hundred to five hundred kilograms per hectare, which is about one hundred twenty to two hundred kilograms per acre, but the right rate depends on your soil and variety. Large podded types need the most. Ask your extension office for the rate for your area, and if possible get a soil test, because soils already rich in calcium need less. Apply gypsum only when the soil has some moisture, so it can dissolve and reach the pods.
Step 7: Balance the other nutrients
Groundnut makes its own nitrogen through root nodules, so heavy nitrogen fertiliser is wasted and encourages leafy growth with weak pods. Phosphorus supports roots and pod set, and potassium helps pod fill, though too much potassium can compete with calcium uptake and reduce pod quality, so do not overdo it. Well rotted compost applied before planting improves soil structure and drainage. Avoid fresh manure, which can encourage fungi and termites.
Step 8: Control termites, millipedes and soil insects
Check the field early and often. If you see wilting patches, plants with hollow stems or pods with small round holes, dig a few plants and look. Termites tunnel into pods and roots, millipedes feed on pods and seedlings, and white grubs chew roots and pegs. Remove termite mounds near the field, clear old crop residue and deep tillage to expose the pests to birds and sun. Where soil insects are a regular problem, use only an insecticide registered for groundnut in your country, follow the label carefully and respect the waiting period. Avoid fresh manure and large amounts of undecomposed plant material in the field, which attract termites. Keep the crop well watered in dry spells, because stressed plants suffer more termite damage.
Step 9: Weed early and protect the pegs
Weed the field at about two weeks after planting and again at about four to five weeks, before the pegs start to enter the soil. After that, do not hoe deeply or close to the plants. Pull weeds by hand near the plants and slash them between the rows. Hilling soil around the plants late in the season buries and damages the pegs, so avoid it once flowering is under way. Mulching with clean, dry grass between the rows helps keep weeds down without disturbing the roots.
Step 10: Manage water carefully
Groundnut needs steady moisture during flowering and pegging, and the soil should drain freely. Where you irrigate, water lightly and regularly in the morning, and avoid overwatering. After heavy rain, check the low spots and open any blocked drains quickly. In dry spells, mulch to hold moisture, and avoid long swings between very dry and very wet soil, because that stress opens the way for fungi and calcium problems.
Step 11: Harvest on time
Groundnut is ready when the leaves begin to yellow, the inside of the shell shows dark veins, and the seed coat has taken on its normal colour for the variety. Dig up a few plants about ninety to a hundred and twenty days after planting, depending on the variety, and check. If most of the pods are mature, harvest. Do not wait for every leaf to turn yellow, and do not leave mature pods sitting in wet soil. If the soil is hard, wait for a light rain or irrigate lightly the day before to soften it, so the pods do not break off the pegs and stay in the ground.
Step 12: Dry the pods quickly and thoroughly
After lifting the plants, shake off the soil and leave them to wilt in the field for a day or two in good weather, with the pods facing up so they dry quickly. Then strip the pods and spread them in a thin layer on a clean tarpaulin or a concrete floor in the sun, turning them often. Pods must be dried until the seeds rattle in the shell and the moisture falls to around eight to ten percent for safe storage. Pods left damp in heaps or sacks grow mould fast, and some moulds produce aflatoxin, a poison that is dangerous to people and animals and cannot be cooked out.
Warning signs of pod rot
Catching trouble early gives you a chance to act. Wilting plants in patches while the soil is wet point to root or stem trouble. Yellowing plants with few flowers suggest the roots are struggling. When you dig up a plant, look closely at the pods. Healthy pods are firm, clean and well filled, with white to light tan shells. Rotting pods are dark brown or black, soft, shrivelled or discoloured, and often smell sour. Pods with small round holes point to insects. Pods with empty or half filled shells, sometimes called pops, usually point to calcium shortage. White cottony growth with tiny round seed-like balls near the soil line points to white mould.
If you see rot in a patch, remove the affected plants, roots and pods, carry them out of the field, and burn or bury them. Do not compost them. Wash your tools before moving to healthy plants, and avoid moving soil from that patch to the rest of the field.
What I would do differently if I started again today
If I were starting over, I would test the soil once and apply gypsum on time, every season, without fail. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole crop.
I would plant on ridges from the very first season, and I would walk every field after the first heavy rain to mark the low spots and fix the drains.
I would never plant groundnut twice in a row on the same land, no matter how good the field looked.
I would stop all deep hoeing as soon as flowering began, and I would train everyone who weeds for me to do the same.
And I would dig up a few plants at pegging and again a few weeks before harvest, because looking at the pods myself would have saved me years of guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my groundnut pods rotting in the soil?
The common causes are waterlogged or heavy soil, soil fungi such as Pythium, Rhizoctonia and Fusarium, calcium shortage in the pod zone, insect and mechanical damage, and harvesting too late. Most rot is a combination of these, so fixing drainage, calcium and timing works better than any single treatment.
When should I apply gypsum to groundnut?
Apply gypsum at early flowering, usually around thirty to forty-five days after planting, when the pegs are about to enter the soil. Spread it in a band along each side of the row and lightly incorporate it, and apply it when the soil has some moisture.
How much gypsum does groundnut need?
The usual recommendation is roughly three hundred to five hundred kilograms per hectare, or about one hundred twenty to two hundred kilograms per acre, depending on the soil and variety. Large podded types need more. Check with your extension office or a soil test for the right rate.
Can I save groundnut pods that have started to rot?
Pods that are already black and soft cannot be saved. Remove them and dry the healthy pods quickly. Never eat or feed mouldy or discoloured nuts, because some moulds produce aflatoxin, which is harmful and is not removed by cooking.
How do I prevent pod rot next season?
Rotate with a cereal for two to three seasons, plant on ridges in well drained, light soil, use certified seed, apply gypsum at flowering, control soil insects, avoid damaging the pegs when weeding, and harvest on time and dry the pods quickly.
The one thing to bookmark
A groundnut pod can only be saved before it is ruined, so give it loose soil, calcium at flowering and a harvest on time, and what grows in the dark will come out clean.
