Total costs = all costs you entered added together. Expected production = farm size ร yield per hectare or acre (or number of animals ร yield per animal). Expected revenue = production ร selling price. Estimated profit = revenue โ total costs.
ROI = profit รท total costs ร 100. Profit margin = profit รท revenue ร 100. Break-even price = total costs รท expected production. Break-even yield = total costs รท selling price.

What is ROI in farming?
Return on investment shows how much profit you earn for every unit of money you spend. An ROI of 50% means you earn 50 in profit for every 100 spent.
What is the break-even price?
It is the lowest selling price per unit at which you recover all your costs at the yield you entered. Selling below it means a loss.
Should I include my own labour and land?
Include them at a fair value if you want the true cost of the enterprise. If you leave them at zero, read the result as cash profit only.

Farm area is converted so that 1 hectare = 2.471 acres. Total fertilizer (kg) = rate per hectare ร area in hectares. A rate given per acre is first converted to per hectare.
Bags = total kg รท bag size. Cost = number of bags to buy (rounded up) ร price per bag. The exact-quantity cost is also shown.

What rate should I enter?
Use the rate given by a soil test, an agronomist, your local extension officer or the fertilizer label for your crop. Rates differ widely between crops, soils and regions.
What do the numbers in NPK 15-15-15 mean?
They show the percentage by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphate (PโOโ ) and potash (KโO) in the fertilizer.
Why does the tool round bags up?
Fertilizer is normally sold in full bags, so the cost of the bags to buy is shown next to the cost of the exact quantity.

Area in mยฒ = size ร 10,000 (hectare) or ร 4,046.86 (acre). Net daily water = area ร crop water requirement. Adjusted daily water = net daily water รท (efficiency รท 100).
Weekly water = adjusted daily ร irrigation days per week. Total water = adjusted daily ร total irrigation days. 1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres.

What is irrigation efficiency?
It is the share of pumped water that actually reaches the crop roots. The rest is lost to evaporation, runoff, leaks or deep drainage.
How do I convert mm per day to litres?
One millimetre of water over one square metre is one litre, so a need of 5 mm per day is 5 litres per mยฒ per day.
Does rainfall reduce the water needed?
Yes, but this tool does not include rainfall. Reduce the number of irrigation days or the daily need if rain supplies part of the water.

Please note: spacing, seeds per hole, germination and seed weight vary by crop, variety and seed lot. Use values from your seed packet or local extension advice. Field emergence can be lower than laboratory germination.

Plants per mยฒ = 1 รท (row spacing ร plant spacing, both in metres). Plants required = plants per mยฒ ร farm area, or your target population ร farm size if you entered one.
Seeds needed = plants ร seeds per hole รท (germination รท 100). Extra seed for germination losses = seeds needed โ seeds without losses. Seed weight (kg) = number of seeds ร weight of 1,000 seeds (g) รท 1,000,000.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the weight of 1,000 seeds?
It is often printed on the seed packet or supplied by the seed company. You can also weigh 100 seeds and multiply by 10.
Why do I need extra seed for germination?
Not every seed will sprout. If germination is 80%, only 8 of every 10 seeds will grow, so you buy more seed to reach your plant population.
Can I use inches instead of centimetres?
Yes. Switch the spacing units to Imperial and enter spacing in inches. Results show plants per hectare and per acre and seed weight in kg and lb.

How much feed does my animal need?
It depends on species, breed, age, weight and production stage. Ask a veterinarian, animal nutritionist or your feed supplier’s feeding guide, then enter the amount here.
Why is a month counted as 30 days?
It keeps the estimate simple. Multiply the daily figures by 31 or 28 yourself if you need an exact calendar month.
Does the result include feed wastage?
No. If some feed is spilled or wasted, raise the daily amount per animal to cover it.
